I know Agnostic Front, Madball, Sick of it All and Biohazard, and they're good. |
I thought the original Hardcore scene was the best, 79-86. Then after that came the shitty post-hardcore music, and all these thug cretins coming to ruin punk gigs. |
Which would be original hardcore and which would be post-hardcore? I'm not too hot on hc history _________________ Yorkshire Ripper 13 - Women's Lib 0 |

English hardcore punk and American Hardcore are too different to compare. Both are separate movements brought about by different circumstances. Although hating Reagan was pretty much universal, both the American Hardcore and UK82 scenes had very little in common on the whole aside from some similarities in the musical composition itself. They both descended from a common ancestor (garage rock, Ramones, etc.) to a point, but the social circumstances were completely different. UK82 was probably more genuine in keeping the spirit of the actual punk rock movement alive than American Hardcore was and in a lot of ways, UK82 spoke more to a general audience. America is a huge fucking place and not every band was aware of each other in the 80s, making each scene unique musically and lyrically apart from some universal social commentary, whereas there was a defining sound in British Hardcore punk. Not to say that British bands all sounded the same, but you can tell a British band very easily from an American one without hearing an accent. UK82 had a metallic sound from the start and the crossover between the punk and metal scene was more evident in Britain than in American punk until the rise of crossover thrash a couple years later. UK82 hit way harder, while the American bands were just playing faster.
I know I'm focusing more on early hardcore than anything else. I am aware that Oi! is being overlooked for the most part and also, American punk that doesn't fit the hardcore template.
The most important punk bands from America are Black Flag (for touring their asses off and spreading hardcore punk across America like a disease), The Misfits (Earth AD was the definitive hardcore album and helped inspire the thrash metal movement in America) and The Ramones (for obvious reasons). The most important British bands were the Sex Pistols (for obvious reasons), The Exploited (probably the most important template for modern street punk), and Discharge (For their countless rip-off copy cat bands and for their immense contributions to punk, metal, crust and grind). That was my opinion however, and other peoples' will differ.
The best is entirely based in opinion. I vote America for two reasons, Suicidal Tendencies and D.R.I. The Exploited might be my all time favorite band, but the other two kill on so many levels and two is always better than one. |

I think they are fuking great! All in the band that can play instrument has a talent, they learned it and try so hard to have a good sound. I can't compare them to other bands in other countries because different people has different talent. _________________ Learn To Play Guitar |

I love the old stuff from the 80's and even some from the 90s. A lot of american punk and hardcore are unsincere and SHITTY these days.
For anyone interested in classic American Punk/Hardcore, check these bands/LPs out. Hell, a lot of these bands are influenced by UK and European bands.
Battalion of Saints-Second Coming LP, Fighting Boys EP
Nihilistics-Self Titled LP
The Dwarves-Blood, Guts and Pussy LP
RKL-Keep Laughing LP
Toxic Reasons-Independence LP
Zero Boys-Vicious Circle LP
Circle Jerks-Group Sex LP
Dayglo Abortions-Feed Us A Fetus LP (canada)
D.O.A.-Bloodied Buy Unbowed LP (canada)
Fang-Landshark LP
N.O.T.A.-Self Titled LP
Total Chaos_Pledge of Defiance LP (very Exploited sounding. I don't like anything else they did though!!)
Granted most of the bands aren't of the "street punk" variety, but I always felt the UK/European bands were much better at that style than ANY American band ever was. _________________ "They make my life so fucking mundane" |
